Pelago is a "Super Umbrian" red wine from Umani Ronchi, first introduced in 1994 by famous enologist. This exceptional cru showcases the remarkable potential of the Marche region's red wines, harmoniously blending indigenous Montepulciano with international varieties to create a wine of notable complexity and elegance. Its esteemed reputation was solidified in 1997 when it received the Best Red Wine Overall award at the International Wine Challenge in London, marking its place among the most sought-after Italian wines worldwide.
Grape variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and indigenous grapes from the Conero area.
Vinification: The grapes are meticulously hand-harvested from vineyards located in Osimo, within the Conero area of Marche. Situated at elevations between 100-150 meters above sea level, these southeast-facing vineyards benefit from deep, calcareous clay-loam soils. Harvesting begins in early September with Merlot, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon in late September, and concludes with Montepulciano in October, ensuring optimal phenolic ripeness. After destemming and gentle crushing, fermentation occurs at controlled temperatures of 27-29°C in stainless steel tanks over 14-15 days using indigenous yeasts. Post malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for 14 months in 225-liter French oak barriques, followed by an additional 12 months of bottle aging to achieve its full expression.
Tasting notes: Pelago presents an impenetrable ruby red hue with purplish reflections. The nose is intense, clean, and refined, offering spicy aromas of coffee, black pepper, licorice, and tobacco, complemented by undertones of grass and hay characteristic of Cabernet Sauvignon. On the palate, it delivers flavors of forest berries, vanilla, and mineral notes, supported by well-integrated, mature tannins that contribute to its overall elegance.
Food pairing: This wine pairs exceptionally well with red meats, game birds, and aged cheeses, enhancing the flavors of robust dishes.
Alcohol content: 13.5% vol.
